Amendment in the Constitution of India by the Indian Government brought up the concept of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in July 2017. It is an indirect tax applied to all the Indian Service Providers including traders and manufacturers imposed for the supply of goods and services. It was meant to replace the existing multiple taxes put in place by the central and the state governments.
For business organizations whose annual turnover turns to exceed INR 40 Lakhs are mandated to make GST registration under the directives of the GST Council. GST is a multi-staged and destination-based tax as it is collected from the point of consumption, unlike other value-added taxes that are implemented from the point of origin. It is a punishable offense for certain business organizations to run their business without GST registration and the entity will have to pay heavy penalties for the same.
GST registration is mandatory for individuals registered under Pre-GST laws, for business entities indulged in trading of goods and services and having a turnover higher than Rs. 40Lakhs, for a casual or non-residential taxable person, individuals taxable under reverse charge merchandise, e-commerce aggregators and their suppliers, and a person involved in the exchange of information and databases online from outside India to a person in India.
GST registration procedure revolves all around the generation of GSTIN. GSTIN, Goods, and Services Tax Identification Number, is a 15 digit alphanumeric code that is capable of automatic aggregation of PAN number in the system. Obtaining GSTIN is a process of very few steps conducted completely online which includes purchasing a registration plan, document verification, generation of ARN number, and finally, the GSTIN.

GST is an indirect consumption Tax which helps in eradication of indirect taxation in the form of numerous taxes applied at each stage beginning from the point of origin.
As GST mentions provisions for online compliance and payments, therefore resulting in the accountability and regulation in the certain unorganized industries.
Previously practiced taxes like service tax and VAT with which the operator had to file multiple returns and compliances that are now relieved under GST tax system as it states that there is need for only one unified return to be filed hence, making it less compliance.
For pre-GST taxes like VAT and service tax, the threshold for registration used to be less as compared to the GST which means that the turnover limit for a business organization to register for taxation is higher for GST than earlier existing taxes.
GST registration is a very simple and easy process conducted online with no manual intervention required hence, saving time from running pillar to post for successful registration as in the VAT or service tax registration.
Pre-GST, various VAT laws were imposed on e-commerce activities and no systematic approach was defined for conducting such activities. E-commerce activists were freed from these hurdles after getting proper directives under the GST laws.
